Weekly Update from Congresswoman Abby Finkenauer

Iowa’s First Congressional District

Helping our Friends and Neighbors

An Iowan was living overseas in Germany temporarily, and applied for social security retirement benefits. He applied months ago, and his application appeared to be seriously delayed. Our office knows that overseas claims are treated differently, but it shouldn’t have taken this long. Our office was able to work with the regional Social Security Office here in Iowa, and within a few weeks we were able to get social security to approve the claim so the constituent could safely plan for retirement. If you or anyone you know is having trouble with a Social Security, disability, or Medicare issue or a veteran needs help getting a medal or benefits, please contact our office.

Lifting Up Iowans Voices

Highlights from Congress

Whether it’s the farms, museums, or our historic sites – the Silos & Smokestacks National Heritage Area is so important to all generations of Iowans. That’s why our office introduced the Protecting the Silos & Smokestacks National Heritage Area Act to make sure that this area is preserved for years to come by eliminating the federal funding cap and sunset provision for the national heritage area. Silos & Smokestacks is a vital driver in the rural economy of Northeast Iowa, contributing $309 million annually to the economy and supporting over 7,000 jobs.

Standing Up for Iowa

Dan Levi from Cedar Falls, Iowa testified before the Small Business Subcommittee on Rural Development, Agriculture, Trade, and Entrepreneurship on the importance of access to affordable child care when it comes to economic development and addressing Iowa’s workforce shortages. Dan and his partners on the Black Hawk County Child Care Coalition are bringing businesses and community leaders together to expand access to child care in Cedar Falls and surrounding communities. I’m so glad that Dan was able to join us and speak to how Iowa is helping lead the way on this important issue.
