Finkenauer Seeks Information and Offers Assistance to Governor After Damaging Storms
WASHINGTON, DC – Congresswoman Abby Finkenauer (IA-01) sent a letter to Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds on Tuesday seeking information and offering assistance in the wake of Monday’s storms that knocked out power and caused widespread damage across eastern Iowa.
"As Iowa Homeland Security & Emergency Management continues to survey the damage, I ask that you keep me informed of the situation on the ground and what will be needed to help make our communities whole," Congresswoman Abby Finkenauer wrote in the letter.
Finkenauer also sought information about the state’s plans to activate the Iowa National Guard to assist with response efforts and offered help in protecting public health as communities work to recover from the storm while contending with the coronavirus pandemic.
"Undoubtedly, the ongoing pandemic stands to complicate procedures for emergency shelters and food service," Finkenauer wrote. "I understand that more resources may be required to ensure the safety and efficiency of these operations, such as equipment for COVID-19 testing and screening symptoms."
"I stand ready to partner with your office to deliver for our state," Finkenauer wrote.
In a statement immediately following Monday’s storms, Finkenauer said, "My heart goes out to all the Iowans affected by this serious storm, and my office is committed to providing any assistance we can in the days ahead. I also want to say thank you to our first responders and lineman, who are already on the job putting our communities back together."
To report power outages or downed lines, Iowans in the First District can call MidAmerican Energy at 1-888-427-5632, Alliant Energy at 1-800-255-4268 or their local electric cooperative depending on their service area.
